Can a Scuffed or Cracked Bumper Be Repaired, or Does It Need Replacing?

Bumpers take most of the knocks a car gets around Sydney: garage walls, low bollards, kerbs, tight car park ramps and the odd reversing bump. When it happens, it's easy to assume you'll need a whole new bumper. Often you don't. Most modern bumpers are a plastic cover over the car's frame, and a lot of damage to that cover can be repaired and refinished on-site. This guide explains which kinds of bumper damage can usually be repaired, when replacement is the better option, and what to check after a harder hit.

Bumper damage that can usually be repaired

Scuffs and scrapes

Scuffs on a bumper corner are the most common bumper damage we see. If the plastic underneath isn't split, we clean and prepare the area, smooth it, then colour-match, blend and clear-coat it so it matches the rest of the bumper.

Scratches through the paint

A scratch that has gone through the paint to the plastic needs more than a touch-up pen. We fill the scratch, then refinish just the damaged area rather than repainting the whole bumper. The paint is applied so it bonds properly to the plastic and flexes with the bumper.

Small cracks and splits

Many cracks and splits in a plastic bumper can be repaired with plastic welding and reshaping, then refinished. A crack is easier to repair when it's clean and the bumper hasn't lost any pieces.

Pushed-in or dented bumpers

Smooth dents in a plastic bumper can often be heated and reshaped, then refinished if the paint is damaged. A dent where the plastic has been stretched or sharply creased is harder to bring back.

When replacing the bumper is the better option

Repair isn't always the right answer, and we'll tell you honestly from your photos. Replacement is often the better choice when:

For damage like this, a smash repairer is usually the right place to go.

Check behind the bumper after a harder hit

The plastic cover is only the outer layer. Behind it, most cars have a reinforcement bar and energy absorbers, and many have parking sensors, a reversing camera or radar for driver-assist features. A low-speed scrape usually doesn't affect any of these, but a harder hit can damage them even when the outside looks minor. After a solid impact, watch for:

If you notice any of these, have the car checked by a smash repairer before getting the cover cosmetically repaired.

Parking sensors and cameras

Many bumpers have sensors or a camera built in. We can often repair damage near them, but we need to know where they are first, so include them in your photos. If the damage is around a sensor that may need recalibration after the repair, we'll tell you before you book.

Why repair rather than replace, when you can?

When the damage is localised, repairing your bumper is usually cheaper than replacing it, and for minor damage it often costs less than an insurance excess. It also keeps your car's original bumper, and with a mobile repair there's no dropping the car off. We come to your home or work, and the usual repair time is 1 to 2 hours. Larger bumper repairs can take longer. Paint needs dry conditions to cure, so if rain or wind on the day would put the finish at risk, we'll rebook rather than rush the job.

Bumper repair or replace FAQs

Can a cracked plastic bumper be repaired?

Often, yes. Many cracks and splits can be fixed with plastic welding and reshaping, then refinished. Long cracks, several cracks or broken mounting tabs may mean a replacement is the better option, and we'll tell you from your photos.

Can you repair a bumper scuff without repainting the whole bumper?

Usually, yes. We repair just the damaged area, then colour-match and blend the paint into the rest of the bumper and finish with clear coat.

Should I get my bumper checked after a hard hit?

Yes, if the bumper has moved, gaps have opened up, or sensors or warning lights are acting up. Have a smash repairer check what's behind the bumper before any cosmetic repair.

Is my bumper repair covered by a warranty?

Yes. Our repair work comes with a 5-year warranty. The warranty covers our repair work only.
