What Affects the Cost of Car Dent Repair in Sydney?

★4.6 on Google from 96 reviews ·Read our reviews

A dent in a door or guard is one of the most common things Sydney drivers ask us about, and the first question is nearly always "how much?". The honest answer is that it depends on the dent. Two dents that look similar in a car park can need quite different amounts of work. We don't publish a price list, because we'd rather quote your actual damage from photos than give you a number that turns out to be wrong. This guide explains what decides the cost, so you know what to look for and what to send us.

How we repair a dent (and why it affects the cost)

Every dent we fix is repaired and refinished. On-site at your home or work, we reshape the dented area as close to its original shape as we can, then fill, sand and smooth it so the panel is level again. We then prime the area, colour-match the paint to your car, blend it into the surrounding paint and finish with clear coat. Because the job includes painting, the cost is driven by how much reshaping, filling and refinishing the dent needs, not just by how big it looks.

The five things that decide the cost

1. Size and depth

A small, shallow, rounded dent from a door ding needs less reshaping and a smaller paint area than a deep dent the size of your hand. Depth matters as much as width: a deep dent usually needs more work to bring the panel back to shape before it's filled and painted.

2. Where the dent sits on the panel

A dent in the flat middle of a door is the simplest to repair. Dents on a body line (the sharp styling crease that runs along many cars), on a panel edge or near a door handle, badge or trim piece take more time, because the shape has to be rebuilt accurately and parts may need masking or removing. Some dents in these spots are better handled by a panel beater, and we'll tell you if so.

3. Paint damage

If the paint is cracked, chipped or scratched as well as dented, that damage is fixed in the same job, because we refinish every dent repair. Larger areas of damaged paint mean a larger area to prepare and blend.

4. The panel material and colour

Most car panels are steel, but some are aluminium, which behaves differently and may not suit a mobile repair. Some colours, such as metallic, pearl and multi-coat finishes, take more care to blend so the repair can't be seen.

5. How many dents need fixing

Several dents on the same panel or the same side of the car can often be repaired in one visit. Quoting them together is usually better value than fixing them one at a time on different days.

Dent repair vs an insurance claim

For a small to medium dent, many people choose to pay for the repair privately rather than claim. A small dent repair often costs less than an insurance excess, and depending on your policy, a claim may affect your no-claim bonus or future premiums. Check your own policy, or ask your insurer, before deciding. If the damage is bigger than a small to medium area repair, such as damage across several panels, an insurance claim through a smash repairer may make more sense.

Will a cheap DIY kit save money?

Suction cups, glue-pull kits and hot-water tricks can sometimes move a shallow, rounded dent on a flexible panel. On many car panels they go wrong: the paint can crack, pulling too hard can leave a high spot, and creased dents rarely come out cleanly. A dent that has been worked on is usually harder, and so more expensive, to repair properly. If a gentle attempt isn't working, stop and send us photos.

Dent repair cost FAQs

Why don't you list prices for dent repair?

Every dent is different. Its size, depth, position on the panel and any paint damage all change how much work is needed, so we quote from your photos instead of publishing a price list. The quote is free.

Is it cheaper to fix a small dent privately than through insurance?

Often, yes. A small to medium dent repair often costs less than an insurance excess, and a claim may affect your no-claim bonus, depending on your policy. Check your policy before deciding.

Is a dent repair covered by a warranty?

Yes. Our repair work comes with a 5-year warranty. The warranty covers our repair work only.
